So we went for our class at the Liberty Science Center today… I knew it was going to have something to do with composting and worms. I was still a little taken aback by all the dirt and worminess of it all. Dd was running around getting into trouble as usual and ds was up to his elbows in worms and dirt … great fun! So, the upshod of it is that we got these cool worms (which, if you’re interested, you can buy from Caroline Biological Supply Company for a very small fee) in a soda container with some dirt and instructed to make it into our own indoor compost … what would you call it – compost bowl? compost bin? Hmmm – I’ll have to think about that. I of course didn’t want to spill the wormies on our way home so i put the soda container in my cupholder in the car – i felt pretty silly but in fact they did not spill and they survived the journey home.
I put the wormies in a bigger container (used a box cutter to cut the top off a 2-litre bottle) and covered it with a washcloth and a rubber band. They have some bits of newspaper in there to chomp on for the moment – apparently all you need to do is toss stuff in periodically and keep the soil a bit moist by spritzing it and they’ll just keep nibbling and reproducing.
I am still not sure I like the idea of worms on my kitchen counter but I have to admit that the little guys are growing on me … not literally, of course. I’ve already told dh so that he doesn’t faint when he comes home this evening. He’s not so crazy about the idea yet but hopefully he’ll come around.
So – we’ll see if we can keep the little guys alive. Ds just loves them and has been talking about them nonstop since this morning. Our first pets! Well, we babysat for our neighbor’s fish once but that was only for a week – looks like these little guys might be here to stay.
We might try this one day. They’ll be in our basement, though.
