One more composting update …

And then i hope to keep my mouth shut about our wormies. I have moved them into a still bigger container (a plastic wide-mouthed jug that toys came in) and will be adding some more potting soil to the mix so the wormies have room to spread out. I honestly don’t do a lot of cooking at the moment and so I have few table scraps – am I going to have to start cooking just so we can feed the wormies? Honestly. We’ve been feeding them mostly newspaper so far and they haven’t been complaining. At the rate they’re going, however, they won’t make a dent in my cardboard/paper recycling – its taken them several days to polish off half a page of newspaper! But apparently they reproduce quickly (something to look forward to).

It seems that if the temperature is between 40 and 80 degrees fahrenheit then they can be outside, but we don’t have a covered area outside and I would have to bring them inside when it rains (more upkeep than a dog, but at least it doesn’t seem like I’m allergic to them). So I have shifted my recycling bins around and I’ve relocated them to a nice happy wormy spot next to my trash can and plastic recycling can. The jug is covered with cloth and secured (tightly) with a rubber band.

I read some details about how to take care of the little guys on this site – there are lots of links that turn up if you google “red wrigglers”. Who knew?

Honestly I’m still pretty grossed out by the whole process and I’m not looking forward to 2-3 months down the road when i have to separate out the wormies from the soil and start a fresh bed for them as described in the article. Ah well – we all have our crosses to bear. All for the sake of mother earth! I shudder to think what next Earth Day will bring us!
